There are many fun ways to incorporate phonics, reading and writing into your summer. You can prevent summer slide by checking out these Heggerty Phonemic Awareness activities (scroll down for your child's grade level). Your child can play Summer Reading BINGO (English, Portuguese). We have websites and apps that will encourage your child to think about their reading and motivate them to write.

This free website has Hour of Code challenges on a variety of topics including Minecraft, Star Wars, Angry Birds, Anna and Elsa, Flappy Bird and more. Code Studio offers online courses at a variety of levels. Students put together puzzle pieces of code to build programs. Students can log in with their Rockland Google username and password.

If you like coding with puzzle piece blocks, check out MIT’s Scratch website! Join for free and make your own stories, games and animations using drag and drop puzzle pieces. Students entering grades 5 and up have Rockland usernames and passwords.

Daisy the Dinosaur

Daisy the Dinosaur is a free app that will teach children the basics of computer programming. This free, fun app has an easy drag and drop interface that kids of all ages can use to animate Daisy to dance across the screen. Kids will intuitively grasp the basics of objects, sequencing, loops and events by solving this app's challenges.

Scratch Jr.

Scratch Jr. is a free app for elementary students that allows them to program their own interactive stories and games. By snapping together graphical programming blocks, children can make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. In the process, children learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer.
