WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
March is Women's History Month, so on the announcements each morning, we are learning about a women who made her mark on history. Today, students heard about Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth ruled for forty-five years. Many people believe that she was the greatest monarch ever to rule England. Where there had been violence and poverty, she created peace and prosperity. She sponsored the arts and the exploration of the New World, starting an empire that would last for hundreds of years. And she did all of this on her own, resisting a marriage that might have made it harder for her to rule in her own right.

Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan were three women who worked at NASA. Originally known as ‘human computers’, they were responsible for calculating complex maths equations for various airplanes and space flights, but all three went on to play a significant role in the Space Race. Their story has recently been brought to light by Margot Lee Shetterly’s book Hidden Figures: The Untold Story of the African American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race which was turned into an Oscar nominated film in 2016.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American airmen in the U.S. Air Force. They fought in World War II. Before they served, the military was segregated. Unfortunately ,they faced racism when they came home. In 2007, they were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Their unwavering perseverance contributed to racial integration in the armed forces, paving the way for equality in the U.S. military.
