R. Stewart Esten Elementary School 4th grader, Joshua Joseph was recognized on Jan. 8 as a “Rockland Hero.” Joshua assisted his family by calling “911” in a medical emergency and was able to provide critical information to help both the Rockland Police and Fire Departments respond to the emergency situation in his home.
At Tuesday’s school community assembly of the entire Esten Elementary student body, Rockland Police Lieutenant Nicholas Zeoli and Rockland Fire Chief Scott Duffey presented Joshua with plaques in recognition of his actions.
Joshua’s mother, father and grandmother were also present at the assembly along with several firefighters and police officers who responded to the emergency call that was made when Joshua’s sister was having a medical emergency. At the time, Joshua’s grandmother was watching the children but she doesn’t speak English, so Joshua took control and provided all the information to the “911” operator who told him what to do until the fire department arrived. Joshua’s mother said that she believes his actions saved his sister’s life.
