On Tuesday, November 6, Randy Pierce came to Rogers Middle School to present “20/20 Vision Quest: Achieve a Vision Beyond your Sight” to students. Randy is totally blind, having lost his sight suddenly over a two-week period in his early twenties. He persevered to become an accomplished entrepreneur, hiker, runner, and martial artist. His theme of perseverance and courage was an important message to complement our One Book One School selection Out of My Mind. Randy’s message of “ability awareness” resonated with students who had read about Melody, a spirited eleven year old with cerebral palsy. He encouraged students not to be hindered by obstacles, but rather to view them as problems to be solved. He challenged students to reach their “peak potential”. RMS students will be raising funds through a read-a-thon to make a donation to Randy’s organization 2020 Vision Quest. Funds will support guide dog training and programs for people who are losing or have lost their vision.
