On Wednesday morning, May 30, approximately 100 soon-to-be graduates of Rockland High School’s Class of 2018 took the time to visit their three former Rockland elementary schools. They also visited the Rogers Middle School. This is the third consecutive year that Rockland High School graduating seniors have donned their caps and gowns and walked through the halls of their old schools.
Beginning at 9 a.m. at the high school, the seniors boarded three buses for the quick trip to the R. Stewart Esten Elementary School. Parading through the halls, they were cheered and given high fives by their younger Rockland Public Schools’ counterparts, and also by many of their former teachers. Next, they travelled to the Jefferson School where their welcome was just as enthusiastic. High fives and cheers at Memorial Park and the Rogers Middle School completed their journey.
Principal John Harrison described the purpose of the event. “I think it serves two purposes. First, the event allows our seniors to return to the elementary and middle schools they proudly attended and say thank you to the teachers and staff members who positively influenced them during their time in the Rockland Public Schools. Second, it allows elementary and middle school aged children to see the success of our graduates, to see the accomplishment of graduating from Rockland High School as the seniors begin the next phase of their life journey.”
He also said that as the Rockland graduates go on to attend college, serve in the military, or begin their careers, their accomplishments are shared by all the Rockland Public Schools’ teachers and staff that have prepared them to be successful. “It’s a complete team effort K-12,” said Harrison.
As for the students themselves, they appeared to enjoy seeing their former schools as they smiled, laughed, and even shed some nostalgic tears with some of their beloved former teachers.
Harrison concluded that he really appreciates “all of the coordination among the principals and teachers in the different schools,” and thanked Samantha Hoyo, senior class advisor, and high school teachers, Kathy Hoffman and Kristen Walsh who accompanied the students.
Graduation is scheduled for Friday, June 1 at 7 pm at Rockland Memorial Stadium.
